How often to post on Instagram ?

How often should I be posting to Instagram……?

There’s an age old theory in our social media circles that we shouldn’t be posting too many posts per day on our Instagram accounts as this will affect the previous posts of the day and result in less reach and engagement from each of those posts.
That’s one of the learnings I’ve believed and taught upon until very recently but recently week whilst holidaying in Greece I decided to poo poo the algorithm and post merrily away all day on my personal account.

I saw little drop in either reach or engagement despite sometimes posting up to 3 or 4 times a day… so I got to thinking 🤔 actually maybe it’s ok to post when you like!
THEN I did some further reading and low and behold Instagram has ‘appeared to announce’ that in fact this less posts is more posting frequency is a MYTH.
In actual fact.. Instagram doesn’t down rank users for posting too frequently or for other specific behaviours as we had thought, though they have said that with the volume of posts every minute and hour of the day it might swap in other content in between someone’s if they rapid-fire separate posts.
But, to be on the safe side and so as you don’t run out of content we suggest the following to our clients;
Once a day if possible with twice being optimal !
However with all of this in mind, posting frequency is not as important as posting consistency. The more often you post on Instagram, the more likes and followers you gain. When accounts post more frequently, the engagement rate has been seen to increase.

This doesn’t mean you should start posting several times per day as your audience might not be used to seeing several posts per day from you and actually as you are running a business after all, you might not have the time to create so much content and maintain your content quality, so posting consistently is more important.
Conclusion – One or two great posts a day is better than 10 mediocre posts.
Alongside this, quicker engagement on a post also encourages your post to feature higher up the newsfeed – determined by the algorithm so the more engagement you can get straight away will benefit the reach of your post. Good ways to combat this is; when you post, hang around for a while, engage with other posts, comment, like and follow new people and search for similar posts to engage with based on some of the hashtags you may have used in your own post.
As ever, please do let me know how you get on with implementing my hints and tips!
